The United States-Japan Foundation (USJF) hosted a two-day study session on social finance in Tokyo from March 26 to 27, 2026. The foundation invited experts and practitioners with expertise in the field for two sessions of active discussion.

During the sessions, USJF shared its perspective on the issue and introduced a collaborative case study involving the Peace Winds / Youth Platform project. Additionally, the overview of the research findings from a study commissioned to Social Finance, recently published, was shared. This was followed by a Q&A session and a discussion among the participants, who exchanged views on the potential and challenges of social finance in Japan from diverse perspectives.

The discussion primarily centered on two key points: (1) expanding the role of philanthropy, including foundations, in social finance, and (2) the future direction of USJF’s initiatives. In particular, practical insights were shared regarding the need for flexible and concessionary capital, the unique role that foundations can play, methods for engaging co-investors, and the appropriate structure for financial schemes.

The Foundation expresses its sincere gratitude to all the participants.
