The United States-Japan Foundation (USJF) has launched Trend & Trendsetters, a new blog series dedicated to exploring the evolving landscape of the nonprofit sector in Japan and the United States. As part of USJF’s expanded mission to deepen support for civil society in Japan, this series highlights critical trends, real-world success stories, and emerging best practices that are shaping how nonprofits and impact investors address today’s complex social challenges. Through thoughtful analysis and practical insights, USJF aims to foster greater collaboration, innovation, and capacity-building across the U.S.-Japan nonprofit sector.
Trend & Trendsetters is designed for nonprofit leaders, funders, impact investors, policymakers, and all changemakers. Each article offers a focused look at the forces driving social impact—from shifts in philanthropy and funding models to grassroots movements and cross-sector partnerships. While the primary audience is nonprofit practitioners and impact investors, the series also speaks to a broader community of stakeholders working to build more resilient, inclusive societies.
The first articles in the series introduce the state of charitable giving in Japan today, examine the structural complexities of nonprofit legal status, and explore the growing role of targeted crowdfunding as a tool for nonprofits in both Japan and the United States. Additional installments will be released throughout the year.
Through this initiative, USJF reaffirms its commitment to advancing public awareness, strengthening civil society infrastructure, and promoting knowledge exchange between Japan and the United States.
We invite you to follow the series and engage with the people and ideas shaping the nonprofit sector’s future.
