The United States-Japan Foundation (USJF) is proud to support the launch of the Keio Leaders Program for Nonprofit Management (KEIO LEAP for Nonprofit)—an innovative initiative at Keio University designed to train the next generation of nonprofit leaders in Japan.

At a time when the challenges facing society are becoming increasingly complex, nonprofit organizations (NPOs) play a crucial role in addressing societal needs. However, many NPOs in Japan face leadership shortages, limited cross-sector collaboration, and a lack of structured training opportunities. By funding this program, USJF is making a strategic investment in building the leadership and management capacity needed to strengthen Japan’s civil society.

Building the Future of Social Impact Leadership

KEIO LEAP is the first program of its kind in Japan, equipping nonprofit professionals with the skills needed to drive lasting impact. Developed under the initiative of professors from Keio University's Business School(KBS) and Shonan Fujisawa Campus(SFC), which has a strong research and education background in NPOs, the program offers MBA-level coursework tailored for individuals at any career stage seeking to develop their expertise in the nonprofit sector.

Participants, including nonprofit executives, government officials, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) leaders, will gain practical skills in leadership, financial management, policy advocacy, and cross-sector collaboration through this intensive certificate program.

USJF has pledged $750,000 over three years to support KEIO LEAP, underscoring its commitment to developing the next generation of nonprofit leaders.

Supporting Change Beyond the Classroom: A Platform for Cross-Sector Collaboration

KEIO LEAP is more than an academic program; it is a hub for cross-sector learning and networking. By bringing together professionals from NPOs, businesses, and government agencies, the program will foster collaboration across different sectors, ensuring that nonprofit leaders work within a broader ecosystem of changemakers.

“This partnership with the United States-Japan Foundation aligns with Keio’s mission to make our university curriculum more relevant to today’s social challenges,” said Keio President Kohei Itoh. “We recognize the critical need to strengthen Japan’s nonprofit sector by equipping future leaders with the business acumen necessary for sustainable impact.”

A Global Perspective: Learning from the U.S. and Beyond

USJF’s support for KEIO LEAP reflects its dedication to international exchange as a core strategy for civil society support. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with leading nonprofit experts from the U.S. and take part in fieldwork with American nonprofit organizations. By integrating global best practices, KEIO LEAP ensures that Japan’s nonprofit sector benefits from international insights and experiences.

“The United States-Japan Foundation is committed to strengthening Japan’s nonprofit sector and deepening connections between nonprofits in both of our countries,” said USJF CEO Jacob M. Schlesinger. “Our collaboration with one of Japan’s leading universities and business schools is a major step toward that goal.”

Shaping Japan’s Nonprofit Future Together

KEIO LEAP launches in September 2025 with a six-month pilot program, followed by the official start of one-year programs in April 2026.

USJF encourages current and aspiring nonprofit leaders, corporate CSR professionals, and government officials to apply and take part in shaping the future of Japan’s nonprofit sector.
