Hiroaki Ishii

Hiroaki Ishii pursued graduate studies in the United States after working in the human resources department of an automotive-related manufacturer for over six years. Upon earning a master’s degree in international relations, he returned to Japan and joined Amnesty International Japan in 1995. In 1997, he joined the international cooperation NGO Peace Winds Japan, where he engaged in humanitarian assistance in conflict zones, the enactment of the NPO Law in Japan, and fair trade initiatives. Around the same time, he participated in the launch of the Japan Association for Refugees (JAR). In 2015, he was involved in establishing an initiative to accept Syrian refugees as international students. Subsequently, in 2021, this initiative was spun off independently from the Japan Association for Refugees, leading to his involvement in the founding of Pathways Japan, where he has served to the present day. In addition, he serves as an Adjunct Lecturer at the School of International and Public Policy, Hitotsubashi University, and as a member of government-affiliated committees, including the Advisory Panel on Resettlement (Cabinet Secretariat) and the Evaluation Committee for the Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) (Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
