Three American members of the United States-Japan Foundation's US-Japan Leadership Program network won their elections on November 5 - two to the U.S. Congress, and one to a state Senate. Following his re-election to a Florida House seat, Mike Walz (2016-17) was chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to be his National Security Adviser.

They join three other USJLP members currently serving in state elective office who were not up for election this year and follow the re-election of five USJLP Fellows Japan's parliament on October 27.

"At a time of growing political polarization, we're proud to have strong representation from both the Republican and Democratic parties in our leadership network," said USJF President Jacob M. Schlesinger. "At a time of growing uncertainty about America's role in the world, it's significant to have among American elected officials leaders with a deep understanding of the U.S.-Japan relationship."

Here are the three Fellows who won their contests:

Mike Waltz (USJLP 2016-2017)
Securing his fourth term representing Florida's 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, Waltz brings a platform focused on national security, veterans’ rights, and economic growth. He has just published Hard Truths: Think and Lead Like a Green Beret (Macmillan), reflecting his support for a fortified military presence and legislation aimed at enhancing veterans' benefits for the Republican Party. Waltz served on the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Foreign Affairs, among others. President-elect Trump has appointed Waltz as National Security Adviser, a job that entails coordinating among all the top national security agencies, briefing the president, and executing his policies.

Ryan Mackenzie (USJLP 2015, 2018)
Currently a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, representing District 187, Ryan Mackenzie has secured election to the U.S. House of Representatives, to represent Pennsylvania's 7th Congressional District. Mackenzie is a Republican who won on a platform prioritizing economic stability, education reform, and public safety. His agenda emphasizes job creation and reducing regulatory burdens to boost Pennsylvania's economy.

Rick Bennett (USJLP 2000-2001)
Rick Bennett has been reelected to the Maine State Senate, representing District 18. He has a long history of service in the Maine Legislature, where he was first elected to serve as the chair of the Republican Party of Maine in 2013, and he was re-elected to a two-year term in 2015. Bennett currently serves on the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee.

Ben Allen (USJLP 2013, 2016) is a member of the California State Senate, representing District 24. He assumed office on December 5, 2022. His current term ends on December 7, 2026. (Democratic Party)

Aaron Ford (USJLP 2012-2013) is the Attorney General of Nevada. He assumed office on January 7, 2019. His current term ends on January 4, 2027. (Democratic Party)

Wes Moore (USJLP 2013) is the Governor of Maryland. He assumed office on January 18, 2023. His current term ends on January 20, 2027. (Democratic Party)
