Tomoyuki Watatanbe, the United States Japan Foundation's Vice and Managing Director (Grants and Japan) has announced his plans to retire from USJF effective December 31, 2025.

Watanabe joined USJF in 2012, first serving as Japan Representative before his promotion to his current position earlier this year.

"Tomo has steered the Foundation through tremendous change during his tenure, while ensuring vital continuity and stability through multiple leadership transitions," said Jacob M. Schlesinger, USJF's current CEO – the third to work with Watanabe. "He was an invaluable mentor to me when I first joined, and has been a trusted partner these past three years. We will miss him."

"Through my years with the Foundation, I have come to know many of you in countless areas of contribution to the peoples of both the U.S. and Japan. I’d like to express my gratitude to all who have inspired and encouraged me in so many ways," Watanabe said. "I am exploring ways to continue to be engaged in Japan’s social sector, and will hopefully share my plans in the near future.”

USJF will hold an event in Tokyo this spring to celebrate Watanabe's work and accomplishments.
