On November 29, 2025, the Tokyo University of the Arts (Ueno Campus) will host Flyby Anomalies: Gravity and Distinctiveness—feminism /queerness / art / activism, a symposium supported by a grant from the United States-Japan Foundation (USJF).

Organized by Yayoi Shionoiri (a 2010-2011 Fellow of the US-Japan Leadership Program), Satoko Miyakoshi, and Emiko Inoue, the event will bring together leading artists and scholars—including Ginga Kondo, Mai Endo, Sharon Hayes, Skawennati, Yoshiko Shimada, and Yui Usui—to explore how art and activism intersect across feminist and queer practices.

As the symposium abstract explains, “In our present moment—where feminist and queer lives are politically threatened and increasingly subsumed under the capitalist framework—how can art and activism resist the overwhelming gravities of patriarchy, capitalism, nationalism, and racism?” Through this lens, the symposium invites discussion on how creative practice can act as a generative form of resistance and transformation.

Attendees will also receive a free Japanese-language zine featuring contributions from the panelists alongside texts by Marina Lisa Komiya, Nodoka Odawara, and Yuki Iiyama. The event is free and open to the public, with advance registration available online.

Flyby Anomalies is generously supported by the United States-Japan Foundation, with additional support from HELI(X)UM.
